The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) is seeking a VP-Standards to lead the Standards Department at the Arlington, VA, office. The executive will provides leadership in the development and execution of business strategies that create value for AAMI stakeholders related to standards. Ensures the programmatic and financial success of standards development efforts and related programs and products of AAMI.
Duties & Responsibilities
VP duties and responsibilities
Prepare and present program strategic plans and budgets to the President and Board of Directors and other governance committees in all areas of responsibilities.
Coach, mentor, and lead the staff who will execute on the strategies, including attending to their professional growth and development and performance to goals.
Foster an environment of inter-departmental collaboration and true teamwork across departments.
Actively prepare and participate in helping lead the staff management team as one of the President’s direct reports and in representation of the Department.
Identify, implement and maintain an operating model that sustains the Department’s program over time and enables either direct or indirect revenue generation.
Represent AAMI and serve as an organizational ambassador to enhance AAMI's image and stature, recruit new members, build key strategic relationships, and support the value of the Department’s work program.
Develop, maintain and promote a department succession plan and career path through cross-training, stretch assignments and other opportunities to visibly succeed.
Develop approved innovations relative to your department responsibilities.
Assist President with special projects as assigned and may be called upon to act in the President/CEOs absence as necessary.
VP Standards duties and responsibilities
Develop, implement, measure, and refine an overall strategy for achieving AAMI’s mission and strategic goals through standards development.
Create and sustain a compelling standards program and product mix that attracts AAMI’s current standards participants and stakeholders and expand this group as AAMI stakeholders grow.
Oversee and maintain a high-quality standards program including but not limited to maintaining ANSI, ISO, IEC and AAMI procedure regimens, maintaining ANSI accreditation, and developing and implementing process and technology improvements to speed high quality standards development.
Develop and implement Department-wide operating initiatives, including process standardization and internal/external customer service improvements.
Assess and redesign AAMI engagement in standards governance bodies.
Serve as the primary executive point of contact between AAMI, government agencies, industry, device users, and associations’ standards contexts, including but not limited to actively building, managing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders (e.g., ANSI, FDA, CMS, NIST)
Provide leadership to the Committee on Standards Strategy and support the department staff’s leadership to the Standards Board.
Evaluate and expand opportunities for underrepresented stakeholders’ participation (e.g., users) in the standards development process.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree, preferably in business, the sciences or in technical communications. Graduate degree and/or certification in relevant areas highly desirable.
At least 10 years of management experience is required, in an organization that either develops standards or does program development with similarities to standards development or consensus building toward concrete program outcomes.
Experience with strategic planning, managing a staff, budgeting and financial management required.
Knowledge of national and international standards policies, systems and procedures, and understanding of consensus development is highly desirable, along with knowledge of regulatory and other uses of voluntary standards, both in the U.S. and worldwide.
Member/customer relations experience and skills in partnering/collaborative relationships external organizations and public speaking experience highly desirable.
Promotional writing and publications experience helpful.
Familiarity with medical technology industry is also desirable.
Working Conditions
Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Hybrid work schedule, two days a week in the office.
Position may require up to six to eight weeks of domestic (including local) and international travel annually.
